Energy Potential was originally named Uppsala Power Management Consultants AB, a patent company established in 2001 by co-workers at the Department of Electricity, Uppsala University. Researchers at the department was at that time the main consultants working for the company regarding technical and IPR issues. The company has also been engaged in financing the continuous patenting of academic results from the department. Historically and contemporary, this is an ongoing core business of Energy Potential.

In 2006, the company strategy was reviewed and the Sixth AP Fund was invited to enter as a new owner. A transformation of the old patent and consultant company, into the new Holding Company, began. The change of name to Energy Potential AB, which was implemented in August 2007, emphasized this new direction of operations.

Since 2001, the company has financed and developed approximately ten patents, which has been transformed into five different businesses.
